Driving real-time impact through lessons learned from COVID-19 vaccine implementation

In response to the unprecedented speed of COVID-19 vaccine development and distribution, the World Health Organization (WHO) and partners initiated a global effort to assess how well countries were prepared to implement vaccination programs.

The COVID-19 Country Preparedness and Implementation Evaluations (cPIEs) were designed as real-time, action-oriented evaluations to identify strengths, challenges, and opportunities for improvement in vaccine rollout.

MMGH partnered with WHO, CDC, and the Task Force for Global Health to co-develop, lead, and implement cPIEs in over ten countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean. Our contributions spanned from technical leadership to field-level execution and cross-country synthesis of lessons learned.

Key Activities

Co-developing the cPIE methodology, data collection tools, and training curricula based on WHO’s NDVP-aligned framework.

Leading and participating in cPIEs across diverse settings, including Albania, Armenia, Barbados, Lao PDR, Lebanon, Maldives, Nepal, Philippines, and Tunisia.

Developing and delivering evaluator training (virtual and in-person) to strengthen local capacity.

Synthesizing cross-country findings to support programmatic course correction.

Facilitating global workshops and forums, including the Global C-19 Exchange Forum, to foster shared learning and alignment across stakeholders.

Outcomes

MMGH’s support enabled countries and WHO to take real-time, evidence-based actions to improve COVID-19 vaccine delivery. By leading evaluations, training local teams, and facilitating Programme Improvement Workshops, MMGH helped strengthen national immunization systems and build evaluation capacity. Lessons from cPIEs were shared through global forums and reports, informing integration of COVID-19 vaccination into routine services and shaping future pandemic preparedness strategies.
