Transforming Learning and Performance Management for Immunization Health Workers
Abstract
Across the Gavi Alliance millions are spent on in-service training and supportive supervision as a primary approach for improving health worker learning and performance management despite weak evidence of impact on health worker performance. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of innovative, digitally supported learning and performance approaches exploded, with implementation of multiple pilots using new approaches and digital solutions. While there is a global movement to shift beyond standalone in-service training and supportive supervision, it is estimated that upwards of 80% of funding committed to human resources for health by donors still supports traditional in-service training and supportive supervision efforts, with variable impact. Transformative change is required to ensure that investments in approaches to improve immunization health worker learning and performance are impactful.
